Walk in the footsteps of Royalty at the Durham Marriott Royal County. With stunning river views and a wealth of period features, we are the ideal setting for your special day.
The Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County is the City of Durham's original royal residence. If you look closely at the front of the hotel you'll notice that this charming property is in fact a series of town houses, the oldest of which dates back to 1630.
Original inhabitants of these town houses included Lady Mary Radclyffe, a member of the Derwentwater family of Dilston, and a half-sister to Lady Mary Tudor, the natural daughter of King Charles II. Elizabeth Bowes, who lived in another of the town houses married the Earl of Strathmore, John Lyon and as a result, the family Bowes - Lyon came into being with the late Queen Mother Elizabeth Bowes Lyon being perhaps the most famous descendent.
Other famous people to have visited the property include Oliver Cromwell, who stayed here in 1650 on his way to the battle of Dunbar and King Edward VII who visited the then County Hotel in 1901. It was after King Edward's visit that the prefix 'Royal' was added.
The carved black oak staircase, a favourite with many on their wedding day, is even older than the building in which it is housed. It was originally in Loch Leven Castle and dates back to the time of Mary Queen of Scots.
